NEWS FROM NASFAA

Seven Republican-led states on Tuesday filed a lawsuit against the Biden administration aiming to block the Department of Education (ED) from implementing its student loan debt relief plan, whose rules have not yet been finalized. Less than 48 hours later, a U.S. District Court issued a temporary restraining order blocking ED from implementing its draft rules which were released in April for public comment.

The Department of Education (ED) on Wednesday, via an updated electronic announcement, gave more details concerning the issue preventing Pell Grant eligibility information from being passed to the COD System for FPS transactions. According to ED, institutions can now submit 2024-25 Pell Grant records regardless of the FPS transaction date. Institutions can also resubmit any previously rejected records with Edit 38, which should now be accepted assuming no other edits are triggered, ED wrote.

NASFAA is pleased to share a draft of its response to the Department of Education’s (ED) Request for Information on the 2025-26 FAFSA. Unlike in other years, ED has not released a draft document for public comment. Instead, their plan is to make no substantive changes to the form itself from the 2024-25 aid year version, but are seeking comments on how to improve help text and suggestions on supporting materials ED can develop. NASFAA hopes our members will use these comments to inform their own comments, which are due to ED on September 13, 2024.
