NEWS FROM NASFAA

The U.S. Supreme Court (SCOTUS) on Friday overturned a decades-long precedent that required federal courts to defer to expert opinions of federal agencies, including on regulations from the Department of Education (ED). Friday’s decision sent shockwaves across the higher education community, with experts saying the decision will be felt by Americans for many years as it relates not only to higher education, but also the environment, public health, and more.

Join NASFAA in asking Congress to delay the Gainful Employment/Financial Value Transparency institutional reporting requirements, currently due on October 1, until July 2025. With the unprecedented impact the FAFSA delays and errors have had on financial aid offices, delaying the reporting deadline will enable financial aid administrators to focus on helping ensure their students have access to a postsecondary education. With the current reporting deadline approaching in a few months, it is critical that your members of Congress hear from you about why an extension is necessary. Visit NASFAA’s Call to Action page to learn more about how to contact your congressional delegation.

Earlier in May, the Department of Education (ED) announced that it would begin processing paper FAFSAs and institutions would be able to submit individual corrections electronically “by the end of June.” On Friday, ED announced that it anticipates the FAFSA Partner Portal (FPP) functionality will be released “in the next few days.” Further, ED said it will be “at least a week” before it begins fully processing paper FAFSAs. However, the department clarified that it has begun assessing paper FAFSAs and returning applications that are incomplete or require additional information. More information can be found via ED’s electronic announcement, which will be updated with more information on FAFSA functionalities.
