NEWS FROM NASFAA

The Department of Education (ED) on Tuesday released final rules on a number of topics that the department says will “raise the bar” on institutional accountability and better protect students and taxpayers. The rules released Tuesday are the remaining accountability topics considered during the Institutional and Programmatic Eligibility Committee: Ability to Benefit, Administrative Capability, Certification Procedures, and Financial Responsibility. The final rules will be published in the Federal Register, though ED has published an unofficial copy.

NASFAA is pleased to release an updated version of the FAFSA Simplification Implementation Checklist to assist institutions in planning for full implementation of the FAFSA Simplification Act in the 2024-25 award year. The latest version includes recent updates from the Department of Education.

NASFAA UPDATES AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

The Verification 2024-25 (Extended Edition) webinar has been rescheduled for Tuesday, December 12, 2023. The rescheduling we hope will allow time for the Department of Education to provide clarification and guidance on outstanding questions critical to the verification process. Register now for the webinar, which will discuss some of the more complicated issues that will remain even after FAFSA simplification has been implemented.

To round out our week of Financial Aid Day & Membership Appreciation Day celebrations, we'd like to thank everyone who participated in our NASFAA trivia and congratulate the following winners: Kim Plaatje, financial aid counselor lead at Lake Erie College, won the NASFAA U Online Course registration. Federal Student Aid (FSA) announced the addition of a new webinar to its ongoing FAFSA Simplification web series that will cover how to create an FSA ID for individuals without a social security number.
