NEWS FROM NASFAA

This week on "Off the Cuff," Justin and Karen are joined by Jon Fansmith, the American Council on Education's senior vice president of government relations, to dig into the latest state of play surrounding the federal budgeting process. The team highlights how Congress’ end of September deadline could impact a host of priorities for the Department of Education (ED), including its FAFSA simplification rollout, negotiated rulemaking, and general operations.

After the Department of Education (ED) began discharging $39 billion in federal student loan debt due to “fixes” to the income-driven repayment (IDR) loan program, two top Republican lawmakers are asking ED to provide more information on its process of forgiving the debt.

Each year, NASFAA presents awards to deserving members of the financial aid profession and higher education community. Let's take a moment to congratulate the winners of the 2023 Regional Leadership Awards, which is presented to individuals, who need not be financial aid administrators, who have made outstanding contributions to the financial aid profession at the regional and state levels over a sustained period of time. Congratulations to Thomas Dalton of Edamerica (EASFAA), Chad Olson of Iowa State University (MASFAA), Myra Pfannenstiel of Newman University (RMASFAA), Marian Dill of Lee University (SASFAA), Tricia Dubroc of Louisiana Public Facilities Authority (SWASFAA), and Anthony Morrone of Nevada State University (WASFAA). Take a look back at past recipients of the Regional Leadership Award, and see all of the 2023 award recipients.

Please join us in congratulating: Keegan Davis, formerly the financial aid technician at Washtenaw Community College, who is now the financial aid processing specialist at Eastern Michigan University; Jill Towns, FAAC®, who was promoted from financial aid assistant director to financial aid director at Georgia Military College; and Jonathan Mador, who was promoted from senior director of student financial services to assistant vice president of student financial services at High Point University. Celebrate your own career developments by completing the "Movers and Shakers" form to share the news with your colleagues.
