July 22, 2009 – NASFAA has given the Nebraska Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators (NeASFAA) a top award to recognize the organization’s service to students, parents and families. In 2008, NeASFAA collaborated with the National Student Loan Program (NSLP) on two statewide Nebraska Financial Literacy Week events to help college students learn vital money management skills. During the week-long events, nearly 600 students on more than a dozen campuses learned valuable skills about budgeting, identity theft, credit reports, contracts, and frugal living.
“It’s important to provide our college students with the knowledge and skills they need to be successful in life,” says Dale Brown, NeASFAA President. “But it’s also important to give them the information and tools they need to be successful in their financial lives.”
Each participating campus hosted and publicized the student financial literacy seminars. NSLP’s accredited financial counselors taught the seminars and NSLP supplied materials and coordinated publicity. The goals for the event were to enhance the money management skills of college students and raise public awareness about the importance of sound financial education for young adults. NeASFAA and NSLP garnered the attention of local media and representatives from Nebraska’s Congressional delegation attended seminars on several campuses.
The event began in April in conjunction with the national observance of Financial Literacy Month. Nebraska Governor Dave Heineman issued a statewide proclamation to kick off Nebraska Financial Literacy Week.
NeASFAA receives a $500 award from NASFAA along with a display banner that resides permanently with the organization.
NeASFAA and NSLP are planning another Nebraska Financial Literacy Week November 9-13. Campuses that want to participate should contact Pauline Balta, NSLP’s Financial Literacy Coordinator, at 800.735.8778, ext. 6858 or paulineb@nslp.org.
