Summary: This letter announces Financial Aid Basics workshops scheduled
January 2009 through September 2009. This letter also includes the link

the workshop that best meets your needs
Dear Colleague:
We are pleased to announce the 2008-2009 version of Federal Student Aid's
workshop for new financial aid staff. Each four-day workshop is taught
by a team of Federal Student Aid trainers at Department of Education training
facilities. Using a mock student file, participants will work through
the financial aid cycle of establishing student eligibility, awarding
funds, disbursing, and completing the school duties that are required
when a student leaves.
Who should attend the training? New Financial Aid Office staff
will benefit most from this workshop, since it is taught at a basic level.
Topics include:
- How to determine student eligibility for the Federal Student Aid
programs using the ISIR, completing verification and applying specific
program requirements
- How the Expected Family Contribution is calculated
- How to handle changes in student information and resulting changes
in the aid package
- Disbursement requirements
- What must be done when a student ceases to attend - including exit
counseling, enrollment reporting, and calculating a Return of Title
IV funds
When, where, and how long are the workshops? A workshop is offered
every month at different Department of Education training facilities.
Each workshop is four days long Monday through Thursday, 9:00 to 5:00
each day.
What do I need to bring? Please bring a pen, a highlighter, and
a calculator. You will receive a large 3-ring binder of materials and
a large loose-leaf manual at the training - so please bring a tote bag
or leave space for them in your suitcase.
We recommend casual attire - we want you to be comfortable while you
learn. Please keep in mind that training facilities are often too cold
or too hot for some individuals, so we recommend dressing in layers so
you can easily adjust.
How do I register for the workshop, and how do I find directions to
the workshop sites?
To view the schedule of workshops, and to register, go to
https://www.fsaregistration.ed.gov/event/profile/web/index.cfm?PKwebID=0x11458a0b2
Registration is on a first-come, first-served basis. Please note that
it is important to register for these workshops, rather than traveling
to the site and hoping to be admitted. The workshops are held in federal
offices and security procedures will prevent non-registered persons from
entering the facility.
Once registered, you will receive an e-mail confirmation. Be sure to
retain this as it contains important workshop information, including how
to cancel your registration if you will be unable to attend. If you
will be unable to attend, please take the time to cancel so that individuals
who wish to attend will be able to register.
The directions to each training location may be accessed by clicking
on the location name in the registration system.
Please note: This training does not satisfy the financial aid
training requirement for schools seeking initial certification to participate
in the Title IV programs. To satisfy that requirement, staff at such schools
must register for Fundamentals of Title IV Administration.
We look forward to seeing you at one of the workshops.
Sincerely,
William Leith
