Financial counseling professionals advance to new leadership roles.
(June 24, 2008) - The National Student Loan Program is pleased to announce that three members of its financial literacy education team have received honors.
Sharon Cabeen, vice president of financial literacy, has been appointed to the board of directors of the Association of Financial Counseling and Planning Education (AFCPE). AFCPE sets the standard for professional excellence for financial counselors and educators through its certification programs, ethical standards, and continuing education programs.
"This appointment recognizes Sharon's expertise in the field of financial literacy education," says NSLP President Randy Heesacker. "She's a well-respected leader in the industry with over 20 years of experience, and we're pleased to have her on our executive team."
Under Cabeen's leadership, NSLP has been instrumental in bringing AFCPE's financial education training programs to dozens of college campuses across the nation so financial aid professionals can learn key skills they need to assist students with financial management issues. Cabeen also authored NSLP's Developing a Financial Literacy Program for Your Students, a helpful, how-to guide that colleges can use to set up an on-campus program; and directed the development of nearly 30 financial education seminars that NSLP delivers to campuses nationwide. She is an Accredited Financial Counselor.
Mel Stephens and Brenda Vaughn, both members of NSLP's financial literacy education team, are Certified Credit Report Reviewers following completion of a certification program through the Institute of Consumer Financial Education. As part of NSLP's work with colleges, Stephens and Vaughn often counsel students about how to understand and use their credit reports to protect their credit history and prevent identity theft. Both have over 10 years of experience working with consumers and college students. Both are Accredited Financial Counselors with AFCPE.
