Antelope Valley College Saves Money And Time With Financial Aid TV

Online Video Service Answers Over 40,000 Student Questions in year 1

Affordable, Easy-to-Implement Content and Technology is Customizable; also Tracks Student Learning Outcomes

About Antelope Valley College (AVC):
Antelope Valley College is a mid-size community college located in Lancaster, CA, with an enrollment of 12,000 students.

Contact:
Sherrie Padilla, Director of Financial Aid

Started Using Financial Aid TV:
Spring of 2007

AVC's Goals in using Financial Aid TV:

  • REDUCE staff time spent answering repetitive and in-person questions.
  • INCREASE student understanding of financial aid and SAP requirements.
  • REDUCE the amount of money spent on printing outreach materials.
  • IMPROVE the effectiveness of AVC's Financial Aid Orientation program and Outreach effort.
  • TRACK student learning outcomes (SLO's) through quantitative measures.

    Results:
In the year since AVC started using Financial Aid TV, the results have been exceptional. Over 40,000 questions have been answered for AVC students by Financial Aid TV. This has freed up staff time to focus on individual student needs. Staff members are enthused about FATV's positive impact on students and reduced staff burden answering basic questions. Moreover, students indicated through surveys that the FATV service was an effective - and enjoyable - format for students to learn about financial aid and their SAP obligations. In addition, the financial aid department is now able to track Student Learning Outcome (SLO's) through the metrics reported in FATV's data reports. Finally, AVC saved money by reducing the volume of printed financial aid publications it orders annually.

    Best Practices:
AVC actively encouraged students to watch the FATV service on the AVC Web site as part of their Orientation Program. In addition, AVC contracted with FATV to create customized segments relating to AVC's SAP policy. The SAP can be a challenge for students to read as it is a dense and intimidating set of rules. By presenting it in an engaging, student-friendly, online video-format, AVC is finding that student's are gaining greater awareness of their responsibilities.

    Comments:
"Financial Aid TV is a great resource. Not only has it helped my students understand the financial aid process and their SAP requirements, it has also helped me begin the process of quantifying student learning outcomes in financial aid." - Sherrie Padilla, Financial Aid Director, Antelope Valley College
