CSLF Announces 2008 VJM Scholarship Recipients

Rocky Hill, CT - June 24, 2008 - The Connecticut Student Loan Foundation (CSLF?) is pleased to announce the 2008 recipients of the Vincent J. Maiocco (VJM) Scholarship. Five deserving Connecticut students, Aimee Furey of Roxbury, CT; Mira Keshwala of Clinton, CT; Megan Morrisroe of Stratford, CT; Luis A. Rios of Bridgeport, CT; and Kelly A. Torres of Enfield, CT were each awarded the scholarship at the 14th Annual Vincent J. Maiocco Scholarship Fund Golf Outing yesterday. The scholarship will be used to help reduce their student loan debt.

Aimee Furey, a sophomore at New York University College of Nursing (New York, NY), majors in Nursing and maintains a 3.47 Grade Point Average (GPA). Ms. Furey is a Certified Nurses Aid and has helped to organize a local community health fair. Ms. Furey has also volunteered at a local hospital and nursing home.

Mira Keshwala, a junior at the University of New Haven (New Haven, CT), majors in Nutrition and maintains a 2.8 GPA. Ms. Keshwala attended school from grade 5 through grade 10 in Mahableshwar, India. In 2007, Ms. Keshwala was a UNICEF volunteer and helped to raise funds for health awareness.

Megan Morrisroe, a sophomore at Eastern Connecticut State University (Willimantic, CT), majors in Math and maintains a 3.69 GPA. Ms. Morrisroe was recently inducted into the Omicron Delta Kappa National Leadership Honor Society and is a member of the Education Club. Ms. Morrisroe has volunteered as an assistant teacher for Vacation Bible School and has also participated in mission trips to a Navajo Indian Reservation in Nageezi, New Mexico.

Luis A. Rios, a junior at Southern Connecticut State University (New Haven, CT), majors in Communication and maintains a 3.11 GPA. Mr. Rios is actively involved in Developing Tomorrow's Professionals, where he mentors males of color in high school. He is also a GearUp College Assistant and Special Olympics Assistant and a member of the Organization of Latin American Students (OLAS).

Kelly A. Torres, a junior at ELMS College (Chicopee, MA), double majors in Communication Science and Disorders and Speech and Language Pathology and maintains a 3.25 GPA. Ms. Torres also minors in Psychology. Ms. Torres is the mother of five children and works full-time as an Aid at the Infirmary for the Felician Sisters caring for ill and retired nuns. Ms. Torres is active in her church and a member of the National Student Speech Language Hearing Association.

The VJM Scholarship Fund, which was established in honor of Vincent J. Maiocco, the first employee and former President of CSLF, provides scholarships to students financing their postsecondary education with loans guaranteed by CSLF. The proceeds of the VJM Scholarship Fund Golf Outing, which was held yesterday at The Farms Country Club in Wallingford, CT, help to fund the VJM Scholarship.

This year, a $20,000.00 donation to the VJM Scholarship Fund was also provided by the National Student Clearinghouse as a result of participation by Mark Valenti, CSLF President, on the National Student Clearinghouse Board of Directors.
